Nationals News
2009-08-11 Alexander Domijan, the top seed in boys’ 18s, was tested on Tuesday, but pulled out a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over unseeded John Huang, of Irvine, Calif. “The courts skid a lot, they’re faster than the courts I’ve been playing on recently,” Domijan said. He and the other top eight 18s seeds all advanced to Wednesday’s fourth round in straight sets. Chase Buchanan (2) defeated Blake Bazarnik 6-0, 6-0; Denis Kudla (3) beat Blake Davis 7-6(5), 6-3; Tennys Sandgren (4) beat Kyle Parker 6-1, 6-2; Evan King (5) beat William Federhofer 6-2, 6-1; Jordan Cox (6) defeated Jacob Straus 6-3, 6-3; Jarmere Jenkins (7) beat Christopher Freeman 6-2, 6-4; and Ryan Lipman (8) defeated Daniel Kreyman 6-3, 6-3. King, playing in 18s for the first time in Kalamazoo, said, “Everybody’s good in Kalamazoo. My first round in 16s was tough, my first round in 18s was tough. There aren’t any easy matches here in Kalamazoo in 18s.” The top four 16s seeds advanced in straight sets to Wednesday’s fourth round. Jack Sock (1) defeated Kristofer Yee 6-1, 6-3; Shane Vinsant (2) beat Christopher Haworth 6-4, 6-3; Bjorn Fratangelo (3) beat Dominic Cotrone 7-5, 6-1, and Jackson Withrow (4) defeated Eric Johnson 6-2, 6-2. Vinsant lost his serve to start the second set, then rebounded. “I completely lost focus at the start of the second,” Vinsant said. “He won seven points straight, but I just told myself to refocus and break back and it worked. “I was trying to move him around because he hits real flat and it’s penetrating, kinda tough to pick up.” Fratangelo said he never played Cotrone before and didn’t know what to expect in his match. “I kinda got off to an OK start,” Fratangelo said. “I got the break, but I just felt like I wasn’t playing the best. Then he eventually got the break back and we were back on serve, so I was lucky to get that first set. “In the second set, I got more relaxed out there,. I was a little jumpy at first, a little excited, and then I kinda took some deep breaths and calmed down. That helped me a lot.”

Tournament News
2009-08-10 After losing Saturday’s singles play to rain, the 16s seeds are seeing their first tennis action of the tournament on Monday. In 18s, the top eight seeds have all advanced to Tuesday’s third round: Alex Domijan (1), Chase Buchanan (2), Denis Kudla (3), Tennys Sandgren (4), Evan King (5), Jordan Cox (6), Jarmere Jenkins (7) and Ryan Lipman (8). Ninth-seeded Harry Fowler, Houston, Texas, went out on Sunday, retiring with an injury in the second set. Fowler lost the first set, 7-6 (9-7), then was trailing unseeded Billy Bertha, Whitefish Bay, Wis., 4-0 in the second when he retired. “I thought I served well and got the breaks when I needed them,” Bertha said. Fowler called for a trainer in the first set and, “It was a 10-minute break or something and my muscles must have gotten tight because I lost the next eight points,” Bertha said. “It was good to regroup after he called for a trainer.” Domijan, Wesley Chapel, Fla., had an easier time, defeating Cal Hilsman, Spartanburg, SC., 6-1, 6-1. He said he figured he’d be the top seed. “When Ryan Harrison pulled out, I knew I was going to be the top seed,” Domijan said. “I got the the final of a Future I should have won, but I cramped.” Domijan, who will be a senior at Saddlebrook, said he’d decided in the next couple months whether to turn pro or head to college. Buchanan, New Albany, Ohio, defeated Andrew Butz, Vero Beach, Fla., 6-1, 6-1; Kudla, Arlington, Va., beat Ken Mkrtchian, Reseda, Calif., 6-4, 6-2, and Sandgren, Gallatin,Tenn., toughed out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Moore., Glenview, Ill. King, Chicago, beat Felix Sun, Potomac, Md., 6-3, 6-1; Cox, Duluth, Ga., defeated Chris Cha,, Overland Park, Kan., 6-3, 6-4; Jenkins, College Park, Gal, bested Trevor Horstmann, Tulsa, Okla., 6-3, 6-4; and Lipman, Nashville, cruised over Michael Lin, San Diego, Calif., 6-1, 6-0.

Opening Day at the Nats
2009-08-07 All the 18s seeded players had byes on the opening day of the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships in Kalamazoo, and at least one player is looking forward to playing the top seed on Saturday. Cal Hilsman, Spartanburg, S.C,., defeated Wyatt McCoy, Shoreview, Minn., 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4), on Friday in a match that lasted three hours. Hilsman, who didn’t compete in the Nationals last year because of an injury, said the biggest difference between 16s and 18s is “There aren’t any easy matches and you have to be a lot fitter. People just hit harder.” Hilsman’s match was the first one called Friday morning and, playing on Centre Court, “I was a little nervous in the beginning, then you get used to it,” he said. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Hilsman said he lost his focus in the second. “Sometimes I just lose sets, don’t really focus,” he said. CI knew I’d won the first set, so I knew I could do it. It’s all about concentration. “I just started focusing a little more because he’s so tough. He was making me play a lot.” Hilsman takes on top-seeded Alex Domijan, Wesley Chapel, Fla., on Saturday.

Freddy Quintos, Murrieta, Calif., also faces a seed on Saturday — No. 11 Junior Ore, Gaithersburg, Md. Quintos defeated Yevgeny Pereverzin, Clackamas, Ore., 6-2, 6-4, on Friday. “In the first set, (Pereverzin) was spraying balls a little bit,” Quintos said. “In the second set, he got more into a rhythm where he was getting more balls back. I had to work a little harder.”

The 16s draw, except for the seeded players, begins play on Saturday.
