Sportsmanship Awards
Dr. Allen B. Stowe Sportsmanship Award for Boys’ 18
Dr. Allen B. Stowe, served as director of the National Junior Boys’ Tennis Championships in Kalamazoo from 1943 to 1957, and was a former Kalamazoo College professor and tennis coach, having coached his teams to 18 straight MIAA titles. Following his death in 1957, a group of Kalamazoo tennis enthusiasts sought to establish a fitting and lasting memorial to Stowe and established a fund for a trophy to be presented annually to the Boys’ 18 player who, in the opinion of the National Championship Committee, best combined the qualities of outstanding sportsmanship and outstanding tennis ability. The name and hometown of the recipient are inscribed on the trophy which is kept in the Markin Center at Kalamazoo College.

Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship Award for Boys’ 16
The Kalamazoo National Championships knew Bobby Kaplan well: a dedicated coach, a fair and knowledgeable official, a distinguished sponsor, and a dear friend of this tournament. In 1977, following his death at the age of 33, the Eastern Tennis Association established the Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship Award. This trophy, a lasting memorial to a true friend of tennis, will be presented annually to the Boys’ 16 participant who in the opinion of the Championships Committee best combines outstanding sportsmanship with outstanding ability.
