8/2/24 Roundup: Tournament begins amid thunderstorms
Waking up to wet courts turned out to be the least of officials’ worries on the opening day of the Nationals. Matches began outside after a slight delay to dry the courts, but afternoon thunderstorms caused play to be shifted inside for the remainder of the day.
Daniel Pero of Brooklyn, Michigan, defeated Tristan Stine 6-4, 6-2 this morning, one of the few matches to be played completely outside. Brooklyn is located in Jackson County near the Michigan International Speedway.
Other players from Michigan who competed today include Pierce Shaya of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Jonah Cernett of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Clayton Anderson of Rochester Hills, Michigan.
Due to the rain, only first round matches of 18 & under singles were played today. Both 18 & under doubles and 16 & under doubles will play tomorrow.
