August 3 Roundup: Doubles begins, local duo at the Nats, top 18s seeds advance
The rain was replaced with heat on Saturday as the second day of the Nationals commenced.
To make up for yesterday’s delays, 192 matches were scheduled. That is around 17% of the tournament’s total matches. The first round of 16 & and under and 18 & under doubles played, as well as the second round of 18 & under singles.
Top seed Trevor Svajda defeated Cyrus Zia 6-1, 6-2. The San Diego native fell to Learner Tien last year in the finals. He told the communications team in an interview that “it’s good to be back” and is looking to do “even better than last year.”
Third seed Kaylan Bigun defeated Nicholas Meyers in two sets (6-0, 6-1). Bigun’s summer has been marked with significant victories across the pond as he claimed victory at the Roland Garros Junior Championships and the J500 in Milan. He reached the quarter finals at the Wimbledon Junior Championships, and is currently the second ranked junior in the world.
A local player also claimed victory at Stowe Stadium today, as Simon Caldwell looks to continue his deep runs in the 18s division. Caldwell, who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, made it to the quarter finals in the 16s division last year, playing in front of a local crowd. “I’m just excited to be here,” he said in an interview.
Other local players include Nolan Ackerman of Mattawan, Michigan, and Sam Schumacher of Portage, Michigan. The two fought hard, but ultimately lost to Allan and Aidan Xu of Texas 6-7(3), 1-6.
Upset Alert: 12th seeded Ronit Karki of East Brunswick, New Jersey, fell to Drew Hedgecoe of Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 18 & under singles.
