Second Seed In Boys 16s Falls, Fourth Seed Survives In Third Set Tiebreaker

In the upset of the day, Boys' 16s singles second seed Luke Shields of Grand Junction, CO, lost in the second round to unseeded opponent Scoville Jenkins. Playing in the obscurity of Court 6 at 5:30 in evening, Shields escaped the first set with a victory in the tie-break, 7-2. But Shields would go on to hold serve only twice more in the match, losing the second set 1-6 and the third set 3-6.

Joseph McWilliams and Brendan Evans, playing earlier on Court Two, provided area tennis fans with a thrilling match that was close from the start. McWilliams, who had won his first round match in three sets, looked comfortable playing in front of a large Sunday afternoon crowd, taking the opening set 6-4. Evans, from Key Biscayne FL, responded by taking the second set by the same score. McWilliams, of Aurora IL, was down an early break in the final set, but managed to send the set to a tiebreaker. Down 4-6 in the tiebreak, Evans saved two match points, one on McWilliams' serve. With Evans leading 7-6, McWilliams held one service point to stay in the match, before the fourth seed closed out the match by winning the next two points. The tension was heightened by a series of overrules and let points due to balls from other courts.
