Sixteen Singles Quarters Wide Open As Top Seed Falls

Number one seed Yevgeny Supeko of Billings, MT left his half of the draw wide open Wednesday as he fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to the 21st seed Todd Paul of Stamford CT. Supeko seemed to be cruising through the matchup through the first set and a half, but Paul turned up the pressure on Supeko and levelled the match at one set apiece. Paul built an insurmountable 5-0 lead in the third set, and Supeko's comeback bid fell short at 6-3.

Other winners in Supeko's half include 25th seed Philip Kao of Cupertino CA, 18th seed Travis Helgeson of Overland Park KS, and 16th seed Mykyta Kryvonos of Flushing NY. Kao was a 6-2, 7-6(4) winner over unseeded Jordan Delass of Marietta GA , Helgeson took out unseeded player Billy Heiser of Vernon Hills IL 6-2, 6-2, and Kryvonos got past 27th seed Chong Wang of Corpus Christi TX 6-1, 6-1.

On the other half of the draw, second seed Vahid Mirzadeh of Wellington FL looked impressive in his 6-1, 6-1 triumph over 14th seed Monte Tucker of Birmingham AL. Fourth seed Timothy Neilly of Bradenton FL had little trouble en route to defeating 26th seed Adam Loucks of Irvine CA 6-1, 6-4. Twenty-second seed Maciek Sykut of Marathon FL eked out a minor upset over 20th seed Eric Riley of Rancho Santa Fe CA 6-3, 6-4.

The 16 singles match of the day was played between 10th seed Scoville Jenkins of Atlanta GA and 23rd seed Jay Cunningham of Edmond OK. A controversial overrule at 7-all in the first set tiebreak gave Cunningham a set point, which he quickly converted. Jenkins then seized the momentum and took the second set easily 6-1. Both players struggled to hold serve in the third, but Cunningham managed to build a 4-2 lead before Jenkins raised the level of his game and eliminated the unforced errors that had plagued him throughout the match. He won the last four games in a row to take the set and the match 6-4.
