Doubles Teams Reach Quarterfinals

Tuesday morning, Nick Rinks of Kalamazoo MI lost a disappointing match to the 4th seed Timothy Neilly of Bradenton FL in 16 singles play 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. However, Tuesday evening he was able to shake off any ill effects of that loss as he and partner Vahid Mirzadeh of Wellington FL upset the 4th ranked doubles team of Marek Czerwinski of Birmingham MI and Maciek Sykut of Marathon FL 6-2, 6-4. Up next for the 9th seeded duo are the 13th seeds Andrew Orban of Fayetteville NC and Eric Riley of Rancho Santa Fe CA. Sixteen doubles quarterfinal action is slated for Thursday.

In other 16 doubles fourth round play, 2nd seeds Jamie Friedland of Glen Cove NY and Brandon Davis of Austin TX squeezed past 15th seeds Nick Meros of Tallahassee FL and Monte Tucker of Birmingham AL 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The 3rd seeded duo Eric Roberson of Sacramento CA and Philip Kao of Cupertino CA reached the quarterfinals by beating the 16th seeds Mak Kendall of Bryn Mawr PA and William Mertz of Silver Spring MD in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Another Kalamazoo area player made an impact in the 18 doubles fourth round. Scott Oudsema of Portage MI and teammate Phillip Simmonds of Reston VA lived up to their 4th seed by defeating the 9th seeds Stephen Bass of Bronxville NY and Christopher Brown of Potomac MD 6-2, 6-2.

The top seeded team also advanced in 18 doubles play. Rajeev Ram of Carmel, IN and Jonathon Stokke of Hilton Head, SC scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over 9th seeds James Wan of Woodbury NY and Mathew Cloer of Brevard NC.

Second seeds Prakash Amritraj of Encino, CA and Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas, CA utilized their strong serves and aggressive serve return games to defeat opponents Stephen Rozek of Chardon OH and Darrin Cohen of Lafayette CA, the number 9 seeds.
