Only Rain Makes Big Splash on Wednesday

No matches were played outdoors on Wednesday, as persistent showers disrupted the schedule and forced back draw and doubles contestants into Markin Center and WMU West Hills Athletic Club. Main draw fifth round singles in both divisions were postponed until Thursday.

Eight 18 doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday evening, with all matches played indoors at the Markin Racquet center.

Top seeds Brendan Evans and Scott Oudsema beat unseeded Elliott Bisnow and Jeremy Sonkin 6-2, 6-2. The second seeds Vahid Mirzadeh and Phillip Simmonds also beat the unseeded Scott Hohenstein and Joshua Lederman by the same score. There were two upsets: Travis Helgeson and Sukhwa Young (14) upending Carsten Ball and Clancy Shields (7), by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2; and the win by the unseeded tandem of Sasha Ermakov and Conor Pollock, who dumped Michael Shabaz and Donald Young, the eighth seeds, 6-4, 6-3.
