Day 2 Wrap-Up
Day two at the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships featured the first round of both 16s singles and doubles as well as the second round of the 18s singles draw.
In the 18s singles tournament, the top seven seeds advanced in straight sets. No. 7 Alex Rybakov got off to a sluggish start, however, falling behind 5-2 to Aron Pierce (Pasadena, Texas) on center court. Rybakov, who lost in the third round as the No. 10 seed a year ago, responded with three straight games to tie the set at 5-5. Rybakov went on to win the first set in a tiebreak (7-4) and closed out set two 6-1.
No. 8 seed William Blumberg (Greenwich, Conn.) faced off against unseeded Henrik Wiersholm (Kirland, Wash.) in the second round. Blumberg, who defaulted from the doubles draw due to illness, won the first set in convincing fashion, 6-1, but dropped the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. Wiersholm, who won his second consecutive three-set match in as many days, faces Tyler Schick (Short Hills, N.J.) in the third round. The 18s main draw resumes in Monday afternoon.
In the 16s singles tournament, none of the top 32 seeds played as all of them received first round byes. Bill Duo (Portage, Mich.) and TJ Oosterbaan (Kalamazoo, Mich.) also received byes despite being unranked.
The 16s doubles tournament went the same way, all seeded teams received byes.
