Semis Set
The semifinals in both 18s and 16s as well as the doubles finals were set on day eight at the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships in Kalamazoo on Friday.
In the 18s draw, No. 2 Taylor Fritz (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) reached the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 5 Michael Mmoh (Bradenton, Fla.). Fritz’s opponent in the semifinals will be No. 3 Stefan Kozlov (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Kozlov knocked off No. 12 Eduardo Nava 6-3, 6-2.
No. 1 Frances Tiafoe (College Park, Md.) will face No. 4 Tommy Paul (Coconut Creek, Fla.) in the other semifinal, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
In the 16s draw, No. 4 Alexandre Rotsaert (Boca Raton, Fla.) came back from a set down to defeat No. 5 Sean Scully (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Rotsaert will face No. 8 Kyrylo Tsygura (North Potomac, Md.) in the second semifinal as Tsygura defeated No. 16 Jason Lui (Bellevue, Wash.) 6-0, 6-3.
The other semifinal will feature No. 1 Jeffrey Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio) against No. 3 Patrick Kypson (Greenville, N.C.). The 16s singles semifinals will begin at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
In 18s doubles, No. 2 Fritz and Reilly Opelka (Palm Coast, Fla) will face No. 6 Joshua Sheehy (Arlington, Texas) and Parker Wynn (North Richland Hills, Texas) in the finals. Both teams advanced with straight set victories in the semifinals.
In 16s doubles, No. 7 Danny Thomas (Pinkerington, Ohio) and William Howells (Boca Raton, Fla.) will face No. 8 Ivan Thamma (San Diego, Calif.) and Bryce Pereira (San Gabriel, Calif.) in the championship tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
