August 8 Roundup: upsets continue in 16s, doubles quarterfinals
The weather was beautiful yet again in Kalamazoo on the seventh day of the Nationals.
The round of 16 for 16 & under and 18 & under singles were played, as well as the quarterfinals in both 16 & under and 18 & under doubles.
Thursday brought more upsets in the 16s division, as the third, fourth and fifth seeds all fell in the round of 16.
Shaan Patel, the 14th seed from Saint Louis, Missouri, defeated Jack Secord, the third seed from Lake Forest, Illinois (6-4, 6-2).
Rishvanth Krishna of Irvine, California, defeated fourth seeded Yannik Alvarez of Cumming, Georgia (6-3, 6-3, 6-4).
Arin Pallegar of Granite Bay, California, defeated Ryan Cozad, the fifth seed from Alpharetta, Georgia (2-6, 6-4, 6-1).
The quarterfinals for doubles played yesterday, with no upsets in the 16s division. The semi finals stage is set. Top seed Yannik Alvarez and Ryan Cozad will play 12th seed Npah Bayon and William Freshwater. Third seed Sutton Severance and Lucas Smith will play second seed Adrien Abarca and Justin Riley Anson.
In the 18s division, notable upsets occurred.
Meecah Bigun of West Hollywood, California, and his partner Mitchell Lee of Oakland, California, defeated the top seed and reigning champs Alexander Frusina of Conroe, Texas, and Adhithya Ganesan of Clarksburg, Maryland. The two Ivy League commits fought hard, winning 7-6(1), 7-6(8).
Bigun’s twin brother Kaylan and his partner Trevor Svajda of San Diego, California, defeated the third seed Noah Johnston of Anderson, South Carolina, and Benjamin Willwerth of Jupiter, Florida. The sixth seeded team walked away victorious in two sets, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The twin brothers are set to play each other at 5 pm on Friday.
Ian Mayew of Cary, North Carolina, and his partner Kase Schinnerer of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, defeated the second seed Maxwell Exsted of Savage, Minnesota, and Cooper Woestendick of Olathe, Kansas (6-3, 6-3). Mayew and Schinnerer are headed to the semi finals against fourth seed Nikita Filin of Glenview, Illinois, and Alexander Razeghi of Humble, Texas.
