August 9 Roundup: wheelchair division plays doubles semi finals, singles quarterfinals
It was another beautiful day in Kalamazoo on Friday, with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. Finals weekend is around the corner.
The Nationals featured the wheelchair division for the third year, and welcomed World Team Cup champions Charlie Cooper of La Quinta, California, and Tomas Majetic of Boulder, Colorado. The two faced off in a singles match, with Cooper emerging victorious in a third set tiebreak.
Cooper and Majetic also played an up/down wheelchair match with brothers Meecah and Kaylan Bigun. This is the first time this event has been featured at the Nationals. Cooper and Meecah Bigun walked away victorious.
The quarterfinals in 18 & under and 16 & under singles played, as well as the semi finals in 18s and 16s doubles.
Rishvanth Krishna, an unseeded player from Irvine, California is headed to the semifinals. He defeated eighth seed Andrew Johnson from Rancho Palos Verdes, CA (6-3, 7-5).
Krishna will face Arin Pallegar, the sixth seed from Granite Bay, California. Pallegar defeated second seed Gavin Goode from Raleigh, North Carolina (7-6(5), 3-0 ret[inj]).
On the other side of the bracket is the top seed Gus Grumet from Mill Valley, California, and sixth seed Keaton Hance of Torrance, California.
The 18s division semi finals will consist of top seed Trevor Svajda of San Diego, California, versus eighth seed Jack Kennedy from Huntington, New York. Kennedy is only 16 years old, playing in the 18s division at the Nationals for the first time.
Matthew Forbes, the 20th seed of Raleigh, North Carolina, will face fourth seed and last year’s 16s champion Cooper Woestendick of Olathe, Kansas.
The doubles finals will consist of top seed Yannik Alvarez and his partner Ryan Cozad, and the second seed Adrien Abarca and Justin Riley Anson.
