August 10 Roundup: upsets in the semis, doubles finals
Finals weekend is underway at the National, as Saturday brought the semifinals singles and the finals for doubles.
No major upsets occurred in the 16 & under singles. The final round will consist of top seed Gus Grumet of Mill Valley, California and 16th Arin Pallegar of Granite Bay, California.
The 18 & under singles finals will consist of eighth seed Jack Kennedy of Huntington, New York, and 20th seed Matthew Forbes of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Kennedy, at only 16 years old, upset the top seed Trevor Svajda in a heated semifinal round match. He emerged victorious in a second set tiebreak (6-4, 7-6(8)).
Forbes defeated the fourth seed and last year’s 16s champion Cooper Woestendick of Olathe, Kansas. The Michigan State commit won in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The ninth day of the Nationals featured the doubles finals in both 16 & under and 18 & under.
Top seed Yannik Alvarez of Cumming, Georgia, and Ryan Cozad of Alpharetta, Georgia, defeated second seed Adrien Abarca of Chula Vista, California, and Justin Riley Anson of Laguna Niguel, California in the 16s division. The pair won 6-2, 6-4.
The 18 & under doubles final consisted of sixth seed Kaylan Bigun of West Hollywood, California, and Trevor Svajda of San Diego, California, against Alexander Razeghi of Humble, Texas, and Nikita Filin of Glenview, Illinois.
Razeghi, this year’s Wimbledon juniors doubles champion, and Filin walked away with a win and an entry into the main draw at the U.S. Open in September in two sets (6-2, 7-5).
