August 8 Roundup: Doubles final matches are set, upsets in singles quarterfinals

The typical August heat finally arrived on the eighth day of the Nationals, and it looks like it will be staying for the rest of the tournament. 

Today’s matches consisted of the 16s feed-in quarterfinal qualifying round, the 18s feed-in quarterfinals, the 16s main draw quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals for both divisions.

Top seed in the 16,s Michael Antonius, was upset by fifth seed Marcel Latak of Darien, Illinois (3-6, 7-5, 6-2). Latak will face the tenth seed, Jerrid Gaines Jr., of Palmetto, Florida. Gaines upset the third seed in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).

On the other side of the bracket, top seeds remained victorious. Second seed Andrew Johnson of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, will be playing fourth seed Vihaan Reddy of San Jose, California. 

No notable upsets occurred in either division of doubles. Seventh seed Shaan Majeed of Cumming, Georgia, and his partner, Lucas Smith of Daniel Island, South Carolina, beat the 15th seed Marcel Latak and Vihaan Reddy in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). They will be playing the second seed, Andrew Johnson, and his partner, Mason Vaughan of Austin, Texas. Johnson and Vaughan beat unseeded Jerrid Gaines Jr and Sebastian Bielen in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). 

The 18s doubles final will feature the top two seeds. First seed Maxwell Exsted of Savage, Minnesota, and his partner Cooper Woestendick of Olathe, Kansas, beat the eighth-seeded Bryan Assi and Justin Lin in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). They will face off against the second seed, Noah Johnston of Anderson, South Carolina, and his partner, Benjamin Willwerth, of Jupiter, Florida. Johnston and Willwerth beat unseeded Theo Hegarty and Noble Renfrow in only 47 minutes (6-1, 6-2).
