Day 1 of USTA Boys Competition Comes to a Tiring Close

The nation's best tennis talent faced off at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium and Sorensen Courts at Western Michigan University starting early this morning. Today's matches included 18 singles and doubles action.

Many of the today's winners expressed relief at having successfully put their first matches behind them. "The first match is always the hardest match," stressed Amer Delic (Jacksonville, FL) after the 2nd seed doubles pair of Delic and Eric Nu?ez (Aventura, FL) finished their 7-6 7-6 win over Todd Carlson (Mableton, GA) and Alex Herrera (Gadsden, AL).

The top seeded doubles pair of Tres Davis (Austin, TX) and Alberto Francis (McAllen, TX) came back to close the door on Jason Ontog (Chattanooga, TN) and Trevor Short (Lascassas, TN) 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Above all, good sportsmanship reigned at today's matches. David Martin (Tulsa, OK) echoed many players' comments when asked his thoughts about their match. Martin responded by praising their opponents' abilities. The 3rd seeded pair of Martin and Phillip King (Long Beach, CA) won their match 6-4, 6-1.
