Top Seeds Debut in 18 Singles and 16 Doubles

Michael Shabaz of Reston VA orchestrated one of the biggest upsets in a full slate of Saturday tennis matches. With a 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1 second round victory, Shabaz sent 13th seed Floridian Josh Cohen home Saturday afternoon at Stowe Stadium.

Sahsa Ermakov and Rook Schellenberg, the 6th seeded 16s doubles team, lost to the unseeded team of Vijay Paul and David Portonova.

Several local players took the courts Saturday afternoon. Trevor McLeod of Kalamazoo fell 6-2, 7-5 to the 16th seed Jeffrey Das. Eric Hodgman of Kalamazoo dropped his second round match to Mark Clemente. The 32nd seed Jason Pinsky called for the trainer up 5-1 in the third set and held on to beat Kalamazoo's Nick Rinks 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. The Kalamazoo area's sole victor was 9th seed Scott Oudsema of Portage. Oudsema beat Justin Montgomery 6-3, 6-3, avenging his 2001 fifth round loss to Montgomery in the 16 singles draw.

Sunday's feature matches include 18 doubles top seeds Scott Oudsema and Phillip Simmonds and all the top 18 doubles and 16 singles players.
