Chilly Weather Doesn't Deter Seeds in Fifth Round Singles Action
Of the top ten seeds in the 18s division, eight have advanced to the quarterfinals, and only one needed three sets to do so. On a chilly and damp afternoon at Stowe Stadium, number one seed Wayne Odesnik beat Timothy Neilly; second seed Brendan Evans took care of Marcus Fugate; third seed Scoville Jenkins downed Todd Paul and Portage's Scott Oudsema, seeded fourth, had little trouble with Travis Helgeson.
Daniel Yoo, the eighth seed and National Clay Court Champion, lost the second set of his match with 15th seed Marc Spicijaric, before prevailing 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
"I was tight," admitted Yoo. "When I get like that, my feet don't move."
But he began to draw on the experience of having played in the finals of the past two National Championships. Prior to the Clays, he lost in the finals of the Easter Bowl to Donald Young, even though Yoo had won the match's first set.
"I had to experience a loss like that--once," Yoo said. "Now I feel great about my game."
In the 16s divison, the surprise of the tournament did it again. Unseeded Michael McClune of Irvine CA, who beat tenth seed Kellen Damico in three sets on Tuesday, dropped the first set to seventh seed Justin Kronauge, but rallied to pull his second straight upset: 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"The Damico match helped me mentally," said the fourteen-year-old. "I knew if I could hold my serve, I could come back."
McClune, who has been playing local tournaments in his home state and in intersectionals, admitted to being startled by his success at Kalamazoo.
"I am surprised, but I'm very happy,"
There was one other upset in 16 singles fifth round play, as Steven Forman sent sixth seed Jean Yves Aubone to the backdraw, by a 6-4, 6-3 score.
In the 16s doubles quarterfinals, the four top seeds will clash in the semifinals on Friday.
The 18s doubles results came close but could not quite match that predictability. The 13th seeded team of Brandon Davis and Ashwin Kumar took out the fourth seeds Timothy Neilly and Marc Spicijaric 6-4, 6-4.
