Altamirano upsets Brymer
For just the second time in tournament history, an unseeded player will compete in the boys 18s finals after non-seed Collin Altamirano, Yuba City, Calif., upset top seed Gage Brymer, Irvine, Calif., 6-0, 6-1, in Saturday’s semifinals. The only other unseeded player in the boys 18s finals was Cecil Mamiit, who lost to Paul Goldstein in 1993. Altamirano (pictured) will play 14th seed Jared Donaldson, Cumberland, R.I., who upset No. 2 Noah Rubin, Rockville Centre, N.Y., 7-6(4), 7-5, in the semifinals, in the five-set championship match on Sunday. It’s the second time in a day that Court 2 claimed an ouster of a top seed. Just before the 18s match, Jake DeVine, the fourth seed from Boca Raton, Fla., defeated the boys 16s top seed Sameer Kumar, Carmel, Ind., 6-0, 6-0.
