Unseeded Pham upsets Kypson

Unseeded Victor Pham hasn’t lost a set all tournament and that includes his 6-1, 6-3 upset of Patrick Kypson, the third seed in boys 16s, in Wednesday’s Round of 16. “I just think I served really well,” Pham said. “I think overall the way I thought and my ball selection was very smart. I didn’t make that many unforced errors so it was much easier to hold serve. When I did break, it was easier to capitalize on that.” Although he was the 15th seed last year, Pham said he wasn’t surprised to be unseeded this year. “I haven’t been playing as many 16s USTA tournaments,” he said. “It was also my junior year of high school, so I was hitting the books a lot. When I did play tournaments, I was mainly playing 18s.” Pham will play ninth seed Connor Hance in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Hance defeated fifth seed Alex Phillips, Peachtree City, Ga., 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday.
