16 Singles Semifinals Set

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – The 16 singles semifinals have been set along with the both doubles finals after day eight of the 2017 USTA Boys’ 18 and 16 National Championships.

In 16 singles, three of the four top seeds advanced to the semifinals. No. 1 Brandon Nakashima (San Diego, Calif.) lost just three games in a 6-2, 6-1, victory over No. 6 Leighton Allen (Austin, Texas). Nakashima’s opponent in the semifinals, No. 3 Siem Woldeab (La Mesa, Calif.), pulled out another three-set victory, defeating No. 7 Alex Lee (Oak Brook, Ill.).

No. 2 Alex Dale (Leesburg, Va.) could not get past No. 8 Stefan Dostanic (Irvine, Calif.) as Dostanic came from 5-2 down in the first set to take the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. No. 4 Will Grant (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated No. 12 Garrett Johns (Atlanta, Ga.) 6-3, 6-4 to claim to last semifinal spot.

In 18 doubles, it will be the top two seeds playing in Sunday’s championship with a wildcard berth in the U.S. Open at stake. No. 1 Vasil Kirkov (Tampa, Fla.) and Danny Thomas (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) took down unseeded Nathan Perrone (Moorestown, N.J.) and Jake VanEmburgh (Belleair Beach, Fla.) 6-2, 6-2. Kirkov and Thomas will meet No. 2 Oliver Crawford (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Patrick Kypson (Greenville, N.C.) as the two knocked off No. 3 John McNally (Cincinnati, Ohio) and JJ Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio) 7-5 6-2.

In 16 doubles, No. 3 Will Grant and Tyler Zink (Bradenton, Fla.) upset No. 1 Robert Cash (New Albany, Ohio) and Ryder Jackson (Nicasio, Calif.) 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to earn a spot in Sunday’s championship match. The other semifinal also went three sets as No. 24 Eshan Talluri (San Diego, Calif.) and Siem Woldeab edged No. 2 Eliot Spizzirri (Greenwich, Conn.) and Spencer Whitaker (Richmond, Va.) 4-6, 6-2 7-5.

Tomorrow’s schedule includes the semifinals in both 18 and 16 singles along with the quarterfinals and semifinals of both feed ins.
