Day Four : Recap

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – Day four saw five of the top 10 players in the 18 singles division fall in the fourth round of the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships on Tuesday.

After surviving a match point on Monday, No. 2 Martin Damm (Bradenton, Florida) couldn’t survive this time as No. 29 Garrett Johns (Atlanta, Georgia) defeated him 6-4, 6-2. Damm’s doubles partner, Toby Kodat (Bradenton, Florida), the No. 3 seed in singles, fell to Cash Hanzlik (Portland, Oregon) by the exact same score coincidentally.

No. 8 Logan Zapp (Fleming Island, Florida) got to tiebreaks in both of his sets against No. 27 Siem Woldeab (La Mesa, California), but failed to win either one in a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) defeat. No. 9 Stefan Dostanic(Irvine, California) took the first set 6-3, but Ryder Jackson (Nicasio, California) battled back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. 

The other top 10 seeds advanced in straight sets with the exception of Govind Nanda (Cerritos, California), who needed three sets to defeat Aryan Chaudhary (Santa Clara, California) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Samuel Rubell (Miami Beach, Florida) is the only non-seeded player in the round of 16.

The fourth round of 18 doubles will take place on Wednesday.

In 16 singles, the top seven seeds advanced to the round of 16. No. 1 Alexander Bernard (Bonita Springs, Florida) needed three sets to defeat unseeded Will Mayew (Cary, North Carolina) 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 while No. 6 William Crooksey (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan) also needed the pivotal third set to defeat No. 22 Colton Smith (Tenino, Washington) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Connor Krug (Lakewood Ranch, Florida) and Alejandro Moreno (Knoxville, Tennessee) are the two unseeded players remaining.

In 16 doubles, the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds both bowed out in the second round. Unseeded Andrew Chang (Trophy Club, Texas) and Alex Han (Tulsa, Oklahoma) knocked off the No. 1 seeds via walkover and advanced to the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 25 Ryan Morgan (Pasadena, California) and Noah Zamora (San Diego, California). Fellow unseeded team Jakob Esterowitz (Rockville, Maryland) and Kurt Miller (Los Gatos, California) advanced over the No. 4 seed via walkover and advanced to the fourth round with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 victory.

Day five features the round of 16 in singles and the fourth round of doubles in both divisions.
