Cooper Woestendick Wins Boys’ Nationals 16 & Under Title
At Stowe Stadium on Sunday, Cooper Woestendick and Lachlan Gaskell competed for the Boys’ Nationals 16 & under title. Woestendick came into the match as the 2 seed and a heavy favorite against 27th-seeded Gaskell. Gaskell hoped to continue his Cinderella run by defeating a top 10 seed for the fourth time of the tournament. Gaskell shocked the crowd early, breaking at 1-0 and sprinting to a 4-1 lead. At the critical juncture of the match, up 30-40 on Woestendick’s serve, Gaskell failed to convert a break opportunity. Woestendick shook off his early nerves, taking the last 5 games of the set to win 6-4. Woestendick continued to roll in the second, breaking Gaskell in the opening game. Down 4-2, Gaskell double-faulted twice to give Woestendick the opportunity to serve out the match. Woestendick cruised to victory in the final game, acing Gaskell to win the match. With his victory, Woestendick completed his dominant tournament run, winning seven singles matches without dropping a set. The six games that Gaskell won against Woestendick were the most that Woestendick gave up to any opponent in the tournament.
In the Boys’ 16 & under third-place match, 6 seed Jagger Leach defeated 32 seed Noah Johnston 6-3 6-3.
