August 5 Roundup: Upsets in the 18s, top seeds fight to advance

It was truly the best (or worst) of both worlds on Monday as the Nationals continued facing difficult weather. Heat and humidity replaced this morning’s thunderstorms. Matches moved outside around 1:30 to play 18 & under singles, and finished under the lights in the later evening.
Due to the rain, both 16 & under and 18 & under doubles were postponed to Tuesday. Third round of 18 & under singles and second round of 16 & under singles in the consolation bracket were played.
Second seed Darwin Blanch played his first match of the tournament in the 18s today after receiving a bye in the first round and advancing due to a walkover in the second round. The Orlando native fought hard against his opponent, Krish Gupta of Fremont, California. Blanch came back from 1-4 in the first set to win the match 6-4, 7-5.
Cyrus Mahjoob, the 13th seed from Rockville, Maryland, defeated 33-seed Callum Markowitz of White Plains, New York. Mahjoob lost the first set 4-6, but came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Upset Alert: Notable upsets occurred in the 18s singles today.
Braeden Gelletich, a 33 seed from Goshen, New York, defeated 7th seed Ian Mayew of Cary, North Carolina (6-1, 2-6, 6-2).
John Cross of Newport Beach, California, defeated Evan Burnett, the 19th seed from Woodside, California (6-4, 2-6, 6-3).
Drew Fishback, a 33 seed from Geneva, New York, defeated the 21st seed Evan Sharygin of Newburgh, Indiana (6-4, 6-1).
