August 7 Roundup: 18s upsets, doubles continue
The beautiful Michigan weather finally arrived for the sixth day of the Nationals. Sunny weather with a low heat index made for a great Wednesday full of matches.
Play began early in the morning and ended under the lights around 10 pm. The fourth round of 16 & under singles, 18 & under singles, and 18 & under doubles played today. The third and fourth round of 16 & under doubles played as well to make up for previous rain delays.
Major upsets occurred in the main draw of 18s singles on Wednesday. The second, third and sixth seed all lost in the round of 32.
Nikita Filin, the 18th seed from Glenview, Illinois, defeated Darwin Blanch, the second seed from Orlando, Florida (6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Noah Johnston, the 24th seed from Anderson, South Carolina, defeated the third seed and this year’s Roland Garros junior champion Kaylan Bigun of West Hollywood, California (7-6(5), 7-6(5)).
John Cross of Newport Beach, California, defeated Maxwell Exsted, the sixth seed from Savage, Minnesota (6-3, 6-3).
Doubles continued, with top seeds advancing in both the 16s and 18s division.
